living room · open plan
A black corduroy sectional this size does not sit in a living room. It becomes the living room. Add a round swivel chair in the same fabric and a deep maroon shag rug, and most of the floor is soft. Here is the room piece by piece — six that earned a place, and one that did not.

Every seat is the same fabric. Sectional, swivel chair and pillows are all black corduroy, so three big pieces read as one. That is what lets this much furniture fit without the room looking crowded.
The rug is the only colour. Beige walls, grey floor, black seating, and one deep maroon shag underneath. The eye goes straight to the rug, and the sofa stops looking heavy.
Everything stays low. The sectional backs sit below the window, the chaise is floor height, and nothing blocks the view to the kitchen. A big sofa only swallows a room when it is also tall.
The order matters when putting it together. Rug first, big enough that every seat sits on it. Sectional second, pushed into the corner. Swivel chair last, on the open side, turned toward the room.
The piece the room is built around. Wide channel corduroy, deep seats, a chaise long enough to lie flat on. Pushed into the corner, it seats a whole family and leaves the middle of the floor open.
Black corduroy shows every crumb and pet hair in the ribs. Worth checking if the cushion covers zip off.
Barrel shape, same fabric as the sectional, wide enough to curl up in. It finishes the L into a loose U without adding a second sofa. The swivel turns it toward the kitchen or the TV.
A round swivel chair needs space on every side, not just the front. Worth measuring the full circle before ordering.
Long pile, deep red, big enough that the sectional and the chair both sit on it. It is the only colour in the room, and it is what turns black furniture from heavy into dramatic.
Deep shag hides a stain but holds every crumb. Worth checking the vacuum can handle pile this long.
Same fabric as the sofa, so they almost disappear into it. They soften the long straight backs without adding a second colour to the seating.
Matching pillows are the quiet choice here. A patterned pillow would pull the eye off the rug.
Centred over the seating, with a light kit under the blades. In a room with this much fabric, air moving over the sofa matters more than it looks.
Black fabric soaks up light. One overhead light is rarely enough for a room this dark at floor level.
Dark metal legs, wood top, a bench on one side. It sits at the kitchen edge and keeps the open plan split into two clear zones: sofa here, meals there.
A bench slides fully under the table. In an open plan room that keeps the walkway clear.
almost picked
A coffee table in front of the sectional was the obvious first choice. Every living room has one. It lost for one reason: with a chaise this long and a round chair on the open side, a table in the middle blocks the only clear path from the sofa to the kitchen. Leaving the rug open keeps the room walkable. The trade is nowhere to set a drink but the arm of the sofa.
One fabric for every seat. One colour, in the rug. Everything low so the room still looks open. The middle of the floor stays empty.
more from the corner
Six pieces that fill the dead triangle beside a glass door.
One dark round table in a soft, pale room, lit by two tapers.
A wood console that holds the tv, the books and the bowls, with the record player on its own stand beside it.
A narrow console, a round mirror, and one lamp left on behind the dining table.
A long oval table, cane backs down the sides, slipcovers at the ends, dark beams overhead.
Glass, cane and a faded rug in a dining corner that keeps the floor in view.
