Everything in this room is soft and pale — cream sofa, faded rug, sheer curtains, beige walls. Then there is one black round table in the middle of it. That single dark piece is what holds the room together. Add two lit tapers and the corner changes after dark. Here is the room piece by piece — six that earned a place, and one that did not.

One dark piece, placed in the centre. In a room this light, a black table becomes the anchor. Everything else sits around it, and the eye goes there first.
Round in front of a sectional. A sectional is all straight lines and a corner. A round table has no edges to line up, so it sits well from every seat and leaves easy walking room at the corner.
Warm light low, not high. Two taper candles on the table light the rug and the sofa before they reach the walls. The pattern in the rug shows up at night in a way it never does under a ceiling light.
The order matters when putting it together. Rug first, big enough that the front legs of the sectional sit on it. Table second, centred on the seating, not the room. Candles and flowers last.
Round top, solid drum base with vertical fluting, matte black finish. No legs, so nothing to catch a foot or a vacuum on. The fluting gives the base texture, so it does not read as a plain black block.
Matte black shows dust and wax. Worth a soft cloth nearby, especially with candles burning on it.
A traditional pattern worn down to a soft haze of mauve, grey and cream. It adds pattern under the black table without adding colour. Low pile, so the table sits level.
Large enough to run under the sofa. A rug that floats in front of a sectional makes the whole room look smaller.
Slim brass holders in an open loop shape, two different heights. The brass picks up the gold in the canvas above the sofa. Two candles, not one, so the table looks set rather than forgotten.
Different heights on purpose. Two tapers at the same level look like a dinner table, not a living room.
One oversized flower in soft pink and gold, in a thin gold frame. Hung over the corner of the sectional, it fills the wall with one image instead of a gallery of small ones.
Hung over the sofa corner, not the middle. In a sectional room, the corner is where the eye lands first.
Tall faux olive in a simple pot, filling the gap between the sofa and the tv console. Loose, thin leaves, so it adds height without blocking the window light.
Olive leaves are the faux plant that holds up closest to real. Thin, matte leaves hide the plastic better than glossy ones.
A low vase with a small bunch of dried flowers in peach and cream, set next to the candles. Short enough to see over from the sofa.
Dried flowers and lit candles sit close here. Worth keeping a hand-width between them.

A light oak rectangular coffee table was the obvious first choice. It matched the warm floor and felt soft like everything else. It lost for one reason: in a room of cream, beige and faded pink, a light wood table disappeared, and the room had nothing to look at. The black drum gave the room a centre, and the round top left space to walk past the sectional corner. The trade is dust that shows on black.
One dark piece in a pale room. Round table in front of a sectional. Candles low so the rug shows at night. Rug big enough to run under the sofa.
more from the corner
Six pieces that fill the dead triangle beside a glass door.
A wood console that holds the tv, the books and the bowls, with the record player on its own stand beside it.
One black fabric for every seat, one deep red rug, and a room that is mostly sofa.
A narrow console, a round mirror, and one lamp left on behind the dining table.
A long oval table, cane backs down the sides, slipcovers at the ends, dark beams overhead.
Glass, cane and a faded rug in a dining corner that keeps the floor in view.
